Our team

The ones making it happen

We are a dynamic team of innovators, scientists and experts committed to driving change in the cement and concrete industry. We do this through data-driven, planet-first innovation and strong, collaborative partnerships. We’re not afraid to challenge the status quo, learning quickly from our failures, anticipating our partners’ needs and moving swiftly and purposefully towards a more sustainable future.

Our story

A new industry player

Material Evolution’s (Mevo) technology has moved from the lab to construction sites in just a few years. We’re on the threshold of being a significant industry player. Here’s how we’re growing.

Early inspiration

During her architectural studies, Dr Liz Gilligan became fascinated with creating sustainable building materials using discarded objects, reframing waste as potential aggregate for construction. Her early experiments—part science, part art—saw her embed found objects in resin blocks. Working with Sam Clark, who would later become her co-founder in Mevo, she realised that a real solution to our environmental challenges would require working at scale.

Exploring early designs

As part of her PhD in Sustainable Cements, Liz designed, built and installed her first concrete façade panels at the Googleplex in San Jose, CA. Although a brilliant product in its own right, she and Sam quickly realised that to achieve their larger sustainability aspirations, they would need to go beyond covering existing buildings in façade panels: they needed to actually make the construction materials for new buildings.

Founding of Mevo

Liz and Sam officially launched Mevo in 2020 from Liz’s parents’ garage, quickly gaining support from the Propel pre-accelerator and getting accepted into the highly competitive TechStars accelerator. Despite humble beginnings in the garage, they had a clear vision—to reduce the cement industry’s significant carbon footprint.

02 Timeline Sam

Initial funding and pilot plant

Liz and Sam achieved a breakthrough innovation: using an alkali fusion process to produce cement with significantly lower CO2 emissions. They recognised the need for substantial infrastructure and supply chain changes to reduce the industry’s footprint. Sam joined the business full-time and the pair secured seed funding from Playfair Capital, At One Ventures and SkyRiver Ventures, and won an Innovate UK grant to establish the first pilot plant. Mevo relocated to a new R&D Hub in Middlesbrough, UK—a region abundant in legacy steel waste, the primary feedstock for the alkali fusion process.

03 Timeline Seed

Scaling and patents

Mevo began scaling its technology and expanding its team at the new Mevo R&D Hub. It developed and patented its new geopolymer, which is stronger, more durable, and emits up to 85% less embodied carbon than traditional cements. Mevo also secured additional grant funding to develop carbon-negative cement at an industrial scale.

04 Timeline-scaling

Growth and Series A funding

Mevo successfully closed a Series A funding round, raising £15 million to expand production capabilities. Plans were set in motion to launch the first-of-a-kind production facility in Wrexham, Wales.

05 Timeline Growth

Looking to the future

The first-of-a-kind Mevo A1 Production Facility in Wrexham was commissioned in October 2024, with an annual capacity of 120,000 tonnes. This marked significant milestone in our mission to revolutionise the construction industry with sustainable solutions. Future goals include launching a new generation of carbon-neutral cement and exploring options for next-of-a-kind factories to scale production further and meet global demand.

Invest in us

Secure a stake in the future of construction

Mevo is scaling fast, having secured £15 million in Series A funding led by KOMPAS VC and Norrsken VC. This investment has helped boost our innovative, ultra-low-carbon cement production derived from industrial waste, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 85%.

Our unique alkali-fusion process eliminates energy-intensive kilns, offering a sustainable and cost- effective solution. We are expanding our production capabilities rapidly, with significant market traction.

Join us in evolving the materials industry and driving significant environmental impact.
